Rebuilding Together Dutchess County helps widow of WWII Veteran

Poughkeepsie, NY – For nearly 53 years, Jane Bell (age 82) has lived in her Town of Wappinger home. It is where she raised her family and is now where she spends her days in retirement.

This fall, her dreams came true: a new roof and free, extensive home repairs.

More than 15 Rebuilding Together Dutchess County volunteers from IBM replaced unsafe outlets, installed smoke and carbon monoxide detectors, repaired the walkway at the exterior of the home that had become a tripping hazard, repaired fascia and soffits, and made energy-efficiency repairs.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County Volunteers Participate in Make a Difference Day

Pbell team pic heroes-w800oughkeepsie, NY –Rebuilding Together Dutchess County held their Fall Rebuilding Day on October 26, as part of their Rebuilding Day Program. They repaired two additional homes, completing a total of 13 homes in 2013.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County (RTDC) repairs and modifies homes for low-income homeowners at no cost to them, to return them to a warm, safe, and dry environment. Sponsorship teams from Antalek & Moore Insurance Agency and IBM completed the work and participated in the largest national day of service, Make a Difference Day.

Those RTDC served on Fall Rebuilding Day included an 82 year old widow of a WWII and Korean War veteran and her son who lost his job over three years ago. Repairs to their Town of Wappinger home of 52 years were focused on keeping the elderly homeowner safe and independent including repairing a walkway, replacing the roof and replacing aging and drafty doors. The second project in East Fishkill was for a family with a disabled mom and three school aged children. Repairs included building new basement stairs and handrails, addressing moisture issues and repairing water damage on the interior of the home, replacing a door and repairing a sagging porch and roof.

"We are so pleased to be able to serve more of our neighbors in need," said RTDC Executive Director Christina Boryk. "Every additional homeowner that we help live in  a warm, safe, and dry environment is a success for our organization, our partners, and our community."

"When I asked for a new roof, I never thought my dreams would actually come true," said the Town of Wappinger resident served by RTDC on Fall Rebuilding Day. "It's been a wonderful experience."

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County along with nearly 200 fellow Rebuilding Together affiliates across the country and the help of hundreds of thousands of volunteers rehabilitate and improve the homes of low-income Americans at no cost. Recipients of services include the elderly, disabled, military veterans and families in need.

Rebuilding Together Dutchess County also completed National Rebuilding Day in April, serving 8 homeowners across the county with over 300 volunteers working to help their neighbors in need and began a Handyman Program this year to address smaller-scope projects throughout the year.

Sears’ Heroes at Home Program Announces Fall Project with Rebuilding Together Dutchess County

Poughkeepsie, NY – Sears Heroes at Home program, which includes collaboration between Sears Holdings and Rebuilding Togetalther, announced the beginning of their fall 2013 Heroes at Home projects. Heroes at Home projects are key initiatives for Rebuilding Together, a Safe and Healthy Housing organization that believes Community Starts at Home, and strive to improve the lives of the military and their families through extensive home rehabilitations.
